Today we planned to travel from Adel's Grove, to Camooweal, and then on to Mt Isa.
After checking with the staff at the Grove, who assured us that the road was open and in good condition. They did warn of a couple of places to watch out for but nothing too daunting.
The Lawn Hill Camooweal Road is the main connection for the area, and it is frequently used by the Adel's Grove staff and the Park Rangers who look after Lawn Hill National Park.
We expected gravel....but.......
However the local have safety in mind and are prepared to go to extraordinary lengths to ensure the safety of the travelling public......
.......saves you hitting somethin like this too fast.....
50 odd kilometres down the road you come across the Riversleigh world heritage site. This is one of several fossil sites in the district, this site offers a self guided walk through an area rich with fossils.
The fossils in this area date back 25 million years, one of the few places where you can get up close and personal with something so old.
This is the cross section of a turtle......
....and this is the thigh bone of a 2.5 metre tall emu like bird. Estimated to weigh 250-300 kg - that is one big bird.........(the yellow feathers are unconfirmed!)
We continued along the way..... we came upon the bits we were warned about... be careful of the current and the crossing may be slippery.....
After surviving four such crossing we continued the rest of the way to Camooweal........
As Camooweal is only 13 kilometres from the N.T border, we figured .....why not......
So after a small detour we continued onto Mt Isa, which is a lazy 188 kilometres ......with not a town, village, hamlet, silo or railway siding between....
Although the road was brilliant (compared to the mornings trek)....
We arrived late afternoon...settled in, we will be here for 3 or 4 days....
Great road
