We departed
Karumba and took the Savannah Way, back to Normanton. A little way out of Normanton we turned
towards Burketown. This road took us
through some interesting landscapes.
Along the
way we encountered some of the local wildlife…
and some of the local flora......
We
stumbled across a bit of history, we stopped in at the Burke and Wills
expedition campground, 119. (there was
no-one there….must have been off exploring?) It was from this camp that Burke
and Wills set off on the 10th of February, 1861, to try and reach
the Gulf of Carpentaria. They returned 2 days later having reached the mangroves on the edge of the Gulf. (although they did not manage to see the ocean)
After leaving Camp119 we continued, toward
Burketown. The Savannah Way is a major
tourist route between Cairns and Darwin.
However one should not be fool into thinking that this is a road that
could do without a “Roads to Recovery” sign……….
Don’t get me wrong, 200 kilometres of single lane gravel road, with floodways, corrugations, dust, the occasional other vehicle (from both directions) and other distractions, does make you maintain a certain level of concentration.
Even the sealed roads have a little something to keep your attention.....like these wandering the roads (most of the properties up here are unfenced.....keeps you on your toes!)
We eventually arrived in Burketown......well it was Burke.....something.....town would be an over-estimation. So after a brief fuel stop, we continued on to Gregory. Again we stopped briefly, at the Gregory Downs Roadhouse/Hotel, before making the final push to Adel's Grove, on the edge of the Lawn Hill National Park.
After a rather long day (about 450K's) we checked into Adel's Grove, we set up camp in the scrub. Just a short distance from the restaurant/bar picnicking/swimming area......
We are here for three nights, the internet is a little slow and temperamental, but I will update when I can.....

Appears you are in the middle of nowhere having a great time with the locals
