Todays journey took us from Winton towards Cloncurry. Just a whisker under 350 k's to do today, fortunately the 'Tail Wind Gods' were on our side, and travelling was not a chore.
Did I mention before that Queensland likes straight roads???
| When I got to the top of the hill in the distance..... |
| ........a bit more straight road...... |
But then just a short distance up the road............... you are reminded that you are well and truly in Oz......................
We arrived in McKinley, Qld. Well bugger me....... If this ain't the home of the 'Walkabout Creek Hotel"
Yes this is "THE" Walkabout Creek Hotel, an Australian gem in the middle of nowhere, made famous by the 'Crocodile Dundee' movie series. Lots of memorabilia, and interesting stuff.
We made it to Cloncurry in the afternoon, after speaking with the tourist information people, we have at this stage, made an alteration to our itinerary. We are going up to Karumba, we'll stay a couple of nights, on the shores of the Gulf. (Our original plan was to go up to Burketown, and then on to Lawn Hill)
The road conditions into the Lawn Hill are improving , so a couple of days will make all the difference, between the Lawn Hill Road being open and not!
Cloncurry is an interesting enough town, wide streets, several old hotels with wide verandahs, a hardware store, supermarket and newsagency. There are smaller service businesses for the mining and pastoral properties over a large area.
Pretty man made recreation are on the edge of town........although the lice warning sign is more than a little off-putting!
We are having Saturday as a rest day, have a break from driving, and just take it easy. Kicking back having a couple of coldies, waiting for the lamb roast to finish on the bbq.

Good to here you are having a day off well done you are a nomad trev.
ReplyDeleteIf you like straight roads, try driving between 3 ways in N.T. to Mount Isa. Glad to see you're enjoying your trip. Love reading your blog.
